Legislature Extends Term of Privacy Commissioner

October 12, 2005

The B.C. Legislature has extended the term of Privacy Commissioner David Loukidelis, pending the selection of a new Commissioner.

Bill 4, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Amendment Act, 2005, also repeals provisions which precluded the reappointment of the Commissioner beyond the first term. The legislature’s selection committee may consider an application by Mr. Loukidelis for a second term.

The Bill received royal assent on September 22, 2005. It provides Mr. Loukidelis with legal authority to continue in his role on an acting basis pending the selection of a new Commissioner.

Labour and Citizens Services Minister Mike de Jong has stated that the changes bring the appointment process into line with the procedures followed for all other legislative officers.
