The BC provincial government has introduced significant amendments to the School Act. Bill 34 (the School Amendment Act, 2002) was given first reading in the legislature today. It contains changes in a variety of areas, including:
• provision for school planning councils in every school
• a formal role for district parent councils
• increased parent rights to choose schools for their children
• changes in the financing of school board operations
• provision for accountability contracts for student achievement
• provision for school boards to engage in entrepreneurial businesses.
