On January 1, 2001, Part 1 of Bill C-6, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act will come into force. As of January 1, 2001, all federally regulated private sector businesses and other organizations in Canada will be required to comply with important new privacy provisions of Part 1 of the Act, which regulate the collection, use and disclosure of personal information by organizations in the private sector. All federally regulated organizations will be required to take affirmative steps in the very near future to ensure compliance with the Act. The Act also provides that effective January 1, 2004, it will apply also to all provincially regulated private sector businesses and other organizations.
