Chief Justice of Canada to retire

The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, has announced that she will retire from the Supreme Court of Canada effective December 15, 2017.

Appointed Chief Justice of Canada on January 7, 2000, she is the first woman to hold the position. She is also Canada’s longest-serving Chief Justice and will have held the position for almost 18 years.
