Bill proposes to amend Human Rights Code to include gender identity and expression

Bill M211, the Gender Identity and Expression Human Rights Recognition Act, received First Reading on November 20, 2014.

This Private Members Bill proposes to amend section 1 of the Human Rights Code to clarify that “sex” includes “gender identity and gender expression.”

The proposed amendment is intended to affirm “the rights of transsexuals, transgenderists, intersexed persons, cross-dressers, and other groups who routinely suffer discrimination based on the expression of their gender or the gender identity they experience.”
