The government of British Columbia is legislating a ban of smoking at schools and certain other public places.
With the exception of the ceremonial use of tobacco in relation to traditional aboriginal cultural activities and other prescribed purposes, the BC Tobacco Sales (Banning Tobacco and Smoking in Public Places and Schools) Amendment Act, 2007 bans smoking at schools and on school property and other specified public places . The Bill also bans the sale of tobacco in certain public places, including hospital and other health care services sites, public university or post-secondary institutions, and public recreational facilities, and limits the display and advertising of tobacco products. If the Bill is passed, enforcement officers will have authority to enter and inspect school property, public places, and workplaces to enforce the new restrictions.
